Ceramics

Thomas Bollmann is a ceramicist, photographer, and educator whose exposure to artists and designers in his youth became the foundation of his interest in contemporary art. In 2019, Thomas completed training under Marc Egan at the Gardiner Museum for wheel-throwing techniques in pottery. Since that time, he has developed a ceramic and sculptural practice involving hand-building large-scale sculptures and using Raku techniques to form organic shapes. His interest in layering textural components through the use of slips adds tactility to his works, which play with weightiness, depth, and form. Most of all, he is fascinated by the fact that through fire, water and mud, one can shape substantial and dimensional objects in a digital age.

Photography

After graduating from Best Sabel School of Design in Berlin, he moved to Toronto, where he developed an interdisciplinary practice, moving seamlessly between the worlds of art and commerce. His photographic awards and recognitions include the selection of his image "Tattoo" as the featured image for the European Month of Photography 2010, a Design Exchange Award for Best In Show in 2011, and recognition from the Design Exchange for his work as the lead photographer of Poor But Sexy magazine from 2009-2012. Thomas' work in photography has been shown at the Künstlerhaus Bethanien and is held in private collections in North America and Europe.
